Subject: The European Library: Improved Search Functionality

Dear network,

Our technical team has just made the search functions on The European Library more efficient and precise.

Users can now search for words including accents (diacritics) such as ‘Österreich’. Our search engine now also offers more detailed suggestions for alternative search terms. Entering the word ‘venus’, for example, will offer the option to search for ‘mars and venus’, ‘venus and adonis’ or ‘transit of venus’.

In addition, results are returned more quickly than ever before with an average response time of less than 1 second for single-term queries. This follows an upgrade to Solr 4.0 software.

The European Library website now indexes a total of 200 million bibliographic records and 16 million digital objects.

With kind regards,

Friedel Grant
